GEAR ADVANTURE

EDUCATIONAL VR GAME / SIMULATING DISABLED PEOPLE

S2-2017/18

INSTRUCTOR: LUISA CALDAS

COOPERATED WITH: SHUANG YAN, CUI WANG, JIE CHEN

The Gear Adventure game aims to provide an opportunity for able-bodied users to experience some of the difficulties of a disabled person’s life. We designed this educational game with the purpose to raise awareness and generate empathy towards others. The protagonist of our game is a little robot who has mobility difficulties and was dumped in the junkyard. The robot has to collect missing gears to return to the normal world. We aspire to somehow make understandable the movement difficulties of disabled people, by designing and programming a set of special gestures and interactions that differ from those commonly experienced by abled-bodied people. By pressing and moving controllers, the player can perform and interact as a restricted-movement robot in the virtual world.

Story Board

The scenario combines both single-line mode and multiple-line mode. Junkyard and reward room are single lines, maze is multiple-line.

Junkyard is the place where the game starts. Here player will meet our guidance robot who gives him an orientation. He will know the background knowledge about “who I am”, his story, his mission and the way he controls the game through controllers.

In the maze, the mission is to collect all the gears that hidden inside some corners and find the ramp. Player will notice that moving every step is so inconvenient, and those stairs, which seems common in daily life, but become inaccessible in the game.

Luckily, the player successfully collect all the gears and find the ramp to the destination, the reward room. Bunch of robots is welcoming him here. The huge machine will help him to assemble the gears, and he becomes normal again.Through the window, The player can see the outside world, he completes the mission!
