SHANGHAI, CHINA

S2-2015/16

INSTRUCTOR: CLAUDIA WESTERMANN & ALEKSANDRA RAONIC

INDIVIDUAL WORK

He liked the fragility of those moments suspended in time.

Those memories whose only function had been to leave behind nothing but memories.

--Soleil by Chris Marker,1983

Because of the historical reasons that Baoshan and Wusongkou were the major areas for Second Opium War in 1856 and Songhu Battle in 1937, it was opened to western countries passively. Later, steel and ironworks, containers and wharf were developed rapidly in Baoshan, thus, a large number of productions import and export and visitors arrive and depart Shanghai from Baoshan. Therefore, for centuries Shanghai has been a city for which the openness to flows of people, trade and investment was of key importance.

Consequently. the author tries to create a feeling of a journey in Final Year Project when entering and walking in the architecture, which is designed based on the aesthetic experience. The film The End, also directed by Peleshyan (1994), was the reference of Final Year Project and researched through the whole design process.

Mediatheque and port are the functions of the building, which not only focus on communication and flow of people, but also take consideration of the transit of information.

The project is also built in VR, providing the opportunity to walk in the building and experience immersively.

Research of the Film 'The End'

Journey is the concept of the project. In order to research the connection among people, the film 'The End' is the case of it.

The movie is about a daily life journey of a protagonist on a train that runs to a distant place, which derives from the order of common life. It focuses on the passengers he saw on the train, and a strong rhythm is created through the speed he saw different people and the train movement. The film is directed in a linear way as a chain, following the timeline and the sequence of people seen during the trip, thus strengthening the order of the movie. The rhythm accelerates gradually, and at the end of the film, the train runs into a long and dark tunnel and the rhythm becomes extremely rapidly.
